Jakarta Vintage

WHEN THE ADDAMS FAMILY MEETS ALICE IN WONDERLAND

When it comes to art and culture, we all know that Bali is always one step ahead or two from Jakarta. So when I stepped into La Favela in Seminyak – whose name is already an effort for my Sundanese tongue to pronounce – I instantly fell in love! Obviously, the hardcore vintage décor caught my eyes. With such dark, shabby interior and whimsical furbishing, it was almost as if you entered the house of The Addams Family after they’d adopted Alice from Wonderland. And I meant it to be a compliment.

Every corner and inch in La Favela is occupied – even the ceilings! Moreover, you can tell that they’re using 100% reused, recycled, and repurposed materials in the entire two-storey restaurant. In addition, there’s a strong Hispano-American Catholicism vibe through the installation of altars, candles, and Saint figurines. La Favela is definitely the place to go for a quick escape or a nice rendezvous!

Finding Vintage in Kemang

Is it just me and my vintage-oriented eyes or is vintage suddenly everywhere you go in Jakarta? Well, maybe it’s just me. Maybe it’s just in Kemang. Well maybe it’s just in those two places that I recently visited: Common People Eatery & Bar and Cafe Mondo, both in Kemang. Offering different kind of cuisines, they have one thing in common: both offering vintage feel and ambience in their interior. While Mondo goes vintage all the way– I would say Indonesian vintage, Common People uses vintage-inspired pieces quite lightly and …uncommonly– a bit industrial, dark and modern.  Look at the pictures here. Both I like. Viva vintage.

Beautiful Tiles of Yogjakarta

I love Yogjakarta for so many things. The batiks, the gudeg, the lesehan, the sense of humor. And now these tiles. I am sure it’s not just me. I saw them in Kraton, in some coffee houses, hotels and restaurants…and in this Diamond Baru tile shop, well of course. I went there last week to check what they have to offer. Knowing Diamond is a lesser known tile brand compared to the legendary Cap Kunci who practically owns the category and the buzz, I was surprised to see how beautiful the tiles are. The tiles featured here are mostly from this shop, and some belong to the Kraton. Dont you love them too?
